Sunday 24th August @ Concrete, Birmingham
SHAANTI PRESENTS… CHAMPION SOUND
Champion Sound is the underground illegitimate child of Birmingham’s Shaanti’s showcase night happening on Bank Holiday Sunday 24th August at Concrete.
Shaanti presents Champion Sound is a heavier and more serious outlook to music with the night’s typically funky approach. The programme is split into three sections: Live Vs DJ Vs Art.
This month Money See Monkey will be headlining the night. Monkey see Monkey do perform totally improvised sets of club music. All their performances and recordings are spontaneously created in the moment, so that while the focus is always the same, no two gigs are ever alike.
Touching on house, hip-hop, funk, broken beat and ambient without ever residing too long in one area, we use a pool of some of the best drummers in the country, and feature guest mc's, vocalists, horn players, poets, artists and other performers as an integral part of their performance.
MSMD are Gareth Parry (guitar) and Taz Modi (keyboards). The project evolved from a weekly residency at a bar in Leeds, which started off as a jazz gig, but quickly erased all traces of typical jazz tunes (and bass players) in favour of a fluid, continuous set of groove-based improvised music. Gigs soon followed at Leeds' flagship beats nights New Bohemia (one of Radio One Worldwide's 5 best UK clubnights) and Harlem Bush Club at the HiFi, as well as support slots for Bugz in the Attic, Jazzanova, Bonobo and Amp Fiddler. They’ve also been recording with drummers Luke Flowers and Myke Wilson; some of the results can be heard here. They’ll be performing live alongside Manga, Bass Flo and artist SKA will be exhibition exclusive prints from her upcoming show.
